My sincere  appreciation to those who purchased eco-yoga accessories from our year-old Flamingo e-store.

The contribution from each purchase has supported the families in India who helped create these products. Together with your assistance, we were able to support 48 weavers and their families at a time of need.

Mat weaving loom is very different from the blanket weaving loom

Who are these weavers?

These 48 weavers are the creators of our unique, eco-friendly and handwoven yoga mats and blankets. Each weaver spends half a day to a full day to complete a blanket or mat. The entire process is labour intensive as they use manual looms driven by constant movement of hands or feet rather than electricity. No power is used in the  process. Weaving is the only work they know and consequently their only source of income.

When the Coronavirus struck and India entered lockdown, they lost their only means of income.

How could we help the weavers?

10 kg rice and a bag of supplies for each family

Upon enquiry about how we can assist during this time, we understood that the immediate need was for food supplies like rice, lentils and other staple goods.

With the money set aside through our product sales and “pay as you like” classes, we were able to purchase and distribute the essential food supplies to our 48 weavers and their families.

Our contact in India personally went to each of the weavers to ensure that no one was left out. We are grateful to have been able to support them during this difficult time.

Where did the fund come from?

The funds set aside for the weaver’s community came from two venues:  the sale of our products and the “pay as you like classes”.

Our selection of handwoven mats and blankets which we purchase from our weavers

Every product purchased meant AED 5/ towards the weavers.  So, a big thank you to all who contributed by buying our products.

The weekly “pay as you like” classes were led by two excellent yoga teachers, Ajit Laxman and Galina Zhuravel in Al Barsha and Dubai Science Park last year. The entire amount collected here was also set aside towards this cause. So, a big thank you to the teachers and the students who attended the sessions and contributed to the cause.

Other yoga instructors around the UAE have also been very supportive, encouraging their students to purchase from us. I also had students buy as many as seven mats to distribute to friends and family, in order to encourage them towards a healthy lifestyle, and at the same time, support the cause. Sincere gratitude.

A special mention and thank you is dedicated to Dubai Science Park and Mr. Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, MD of DSP, for their generous support. They not only offered us their beautiful premises for the “pay as you like” classes, but also purchased our eco-friendly cotton mats and eye pillows for their wellness program as part of Dubai 30×30 Fitness Challenge.

When we started Yoga and e-boutique initiatives, these were the causes we wanted to drive forward:  to encourage a healthy and ecofriendly living throughout the community and support the weavers in India. Going forward, we hope to continue channelizing our energy towards these causes and   support the weavers with the help of our Flamingo community.
