Benefits of Pranayam / Breathing exercises
Breathing is an essential part of Yoga as well as daily life. The mind, body and breath are connected and can have a strong influence over each other. For example, stress stemming from daily activities such as work can result in fast, shallow breathing. This in turn can have negative physiological effects.
Practicing controlled breathing in Yoga can have a myriad of benefits. Pranayama is the fourth limb of yoga and it refers to breathing techniques that help control prana, the vital life force. Pranayama can be a great way to start the day early in the morning or end the day before bed.
The regular practice of pranayama can have several benefits including
- – Decreased feelings of anxiety and depression
- – Reduced and stabilized blood pressure
- – Better oxygen delivery
- – Higher energy levels
- – Muscle relaxation
- – Decreased feelings of stress
- – Relief in symptoms of asthma
- – Improvement in autonomic function
- – Better digestion and less inflammation
- – The release of endorphins
- – Increased detoxification
- – Better attention and concentration
